“We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals. Remote from universal nature and living by complicated artifice, man in civilisation surveys the creature through the glass of his knowledge and sees thereby a feather magnified and the whole image in distortion. We patronise them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate for having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein do we err. For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours, they move finished and complete, gifted with the extension of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings: they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth.”

Remembrance Day for Lost Species 2016

Thank you to everyone who came and participated in our remembrance.

Maybe you were inspired to mark tomorrow, 30 November in your own way.

Here is a blogpost by my co-organiser Allie - sharing her thoughts on why she gets involved.

Gathering on Sunday 27 November 2016 at 12pm

Crystal Palace Dinosaur Park

“Three species are lost to eternity every hour”.

Extinction is Now.
But this is not like the dinosaurs. The current extinction crisis is driven by human activity like hunting, pollution, encroachment and climate change. The rate is unprecedented. Many have gone, many are on the brink, barely clinging on.

These species are close to extinction RIGHT NOW: Northern White Rhino, Ivory billed woodpecker, Amur Leopard, South China tiger, Mountain gorilla, Saolas, Vaquita porpoise, Hawaiian Crow, Javan Rhino, Northern sportive lemur, Hawksbill sea turtle, Blue-throated macaw, Sumatran elephant, Nene goose, Indiana bat, Iberian Lynx, Kihansi spray toad, Kakapo, Hawaiian monk seal, Leatherback turtle.

We'll gather at 12pm and say a few words, then we'll read out a list of 125 extinct species, anyone is welcome to join in. There'll be a little live music. Feel free to share a few words, a poem, a song or just chat and share your thoughts or just be. And to bring a candle if you like.

Hope to see you there, and please spread the word.
